A Brief Introduction to Modern AI & Analytics for Insurance

    Abstract:

    Methodological advances in machine learning, computer science, and statistics are revolutionizing the way insurance companies assess, price, and mitigate risk. In this talk, we will first give an overview of the insurance industry with an emphasis on the critical role AI and analytics plays in guiding risk management decisions. This will be followed by a deep dive on several real-world applications of AI at Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB), a leading insurance company in equipment breakdown, engineering, and cyber risk.

    Bios:

    Patrick Toman is a Principal Data Scientist working on the Advanced Analytics and AI team at HSB where he works primarily on projects related to equipment breakdown and IoT. He graduated from UConn in 2023 with a Ph.D. in Statistics and currently resides in Philadelphia, PA with his wife, Ashley, and 1-year old son, Levi.

    Nathan Lally is the Head of Data Science – Underwriting and Risk as part of HSB’s broader Advanced Analytics & AI department. He holds an MS in mathematics from UConn and has worked in data science and analytics roles for over 10 years in both the engineering and insurance industries. He currently resides in Andover, CT with his wife, Shirley, and daughter, Emily.
